"The ultimate weakness of violence is that it is a descending spiral, begetting the very thing it seeks to destroy. Instead of diminishing evil, it multiplies it.
Through violence you may murder the liar, but you cannot murder the lie, nor establish the truth.
Through violence you may murder the hater, but you do not murder hate. In fact, violence merely increases hate. So it goes. ...
Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars.
Darkness cannot drive out darkness: only light can do that.
Hate cannot drive out hate: only love can do that."

we are light, energy, love.
everything is ultimately made of one light *
this light has a spectrum of what i think of as 'density'.
as humans, we are a dense spectrum of energy that recognizes itself and our surroundings.
ideally, we do this continuously, but sometimes we are more awake than others.
we are able to 'know' ourselves, able to recreate ourselves, and able to alter our environment.
we occupy most of our time this way.
obviously.

my fellow family ::
today is a profound day for me.
the birth of my first child happened yesterday at 4:40 am, at home, in our bedroom, quickly, and smoothly, with the aid of an extremely wise and loving midwife.
it's a girl! ^_^ her name is 'adresa joy', 'adresa' being the first song i ever wrote, a love song for my very first childhood love, and 'joy' being hannah's middle name, her spirit and vitality.
this event was completely thrilling, exciting, intense, and fun! :)
our six year old, nathan, is completely overjoyed, am i.
hannah is healthy, the baby is beautiful, and we are completely blessed.
on the flip side of this coin, today, my dearest grandmother died.
her name was 'joyce' and she was the most loving force in my life.
my grandmother gave, then gave some more, throughout her time here.
at one point, my grandmother had 14 members of our family living under her roof, sheltering us, caring for her huge family, of which i am one.
i feel such a deep love for her, for her life, and for her caring.
the bottom line is, i am stunned.
frozen.
in a kind of wide-eyed overwhelm that is utterly profound....
beyond
w o r d s .
been crying all night.
i love you.
i love you all.

for some odd reason, i've been going through a lot of internal struggle this year.
looking at my life right now, it seems absolutely absurd that i should.
i live with a totally wonderful woman, carrying my baby nearly born, and a beautifully brilliant six year old boy who i am fathering. we live in a lovely hawaiian home just down the road from stunning beaches with a vast jungle in our backyard. i have access to advanced equipment to work with all day in support of the most inspiring project imaginable. i have a highly successful music career, and the endless loving support of so many friends and family...
so, in light of all this, what do i possibly have to despair?
can i be so spoiled?
all i can think is, i must be addicted to conflict.
if everything is ideal in my immediate external life, then i must be creating some inner drama to compensate, simply out of some kind of habit.
tonight, all i can say is, i'm sorry.
i'm sorry to everyone, but mostly to myself, for refusing to completely embrace and fully appreciate these gifts that i am immersed in.
this has been an ongoing lesson for me, the complications of success, the difficulty of accepting achievement.
this reminds me of a quote from the 'tao te ching' ::
"People usually fail when they are on the verge of success.
So give as much care to the end as to the beginning;
Then there will be no failure."
thank you world.
thank you life.
thank you for all that is.
thank you for all that we are.

today was my first impromptu jujutsu lesson on the beach.
after my usual morning ocean meditations / exercises and warm ups, i broke into some wing chun kung fu forms.
a large drunken local called me over to him, and without warning, proceeded to pounce on me for a match.
must say that i was able to hold this guy off for quite a while, but he eventually subdued me with his massive weight and size, grinding my head into the sand.
with my mouth in the beach, i told this big fellow that i was 'tapping out'.
he honored my submission and released me, scolding me for training on the public beach. said it was 'disrespectful to him'.
perhaps it is...
at any rate, i'll certainly be a bit more careful where and when i train..
it's such a blessing to have open space to release everything.
our new home is giving us much of this...
great love to all.

some advice i just wrote for a friend ::
there's a saying that goes something like this ::
'it takes a strong person to overcome failure, but an even stronger person to overcome success.'
yes indeed... right as our dreams are finally coming true, a whole new dimension of conflict will present itself, often more subtle and sophisticated than the last.
have seen this time and time again...
the thing is, problems are addictions.
we cling to them, strive to solve them, and spend lots of energy on them.
yet when we win, those problems disappear, and at this point, we can feel at a loss with what to do with ourselves, what to focus on, and what our next challenge is.
if we're not careful, this confusion can lead to depression and self destruction.
here's my advice ::
relax. enjoy the simple things of life. treat yourself and those you love to small gifts like massage, hot baths, gentle music, good meals.
expand your awareness to your new situation and surroundings. let go of the past and focus on your current reality.
identify your new challenges, new goals, and begin working to achieve them.
~
i can't tell you how much i understand this process. been through it so many times, it feels like a blur.
depression and apathy still catch me, often when i get lost in my memories.
memories can be dangerous to dwell upon.
this is one reason why i emphasize meditation so much...
would be happy to talk about food more, but diet is really just a byproduct of mental states.
you know what you want and need.
go for it!

with this whole chemtrail issue, my experience is that it largely depends where you are located.
i've experienced various degrees of trails in the sky depending upon where i am.
in northern california, it was blatant and publicly announced spraying of the sky for 'mosquito control'.
if you pay attention, you will notice a strong difference between 'contrails' and 'chemtrails'.
contrails eventually disappear, usually rather quickly.
chemtrails last, diffuse, spread, and often will spawn a completely cloudy sky.
many countries, such as china, are openly public about their 'weather modification' programs.
here in the united kingdom, the skies are quite often filled with pervasive, lasting trails. it's amazingly intense how much crap there is in the sky at times above and around london.
what is being discharged is certainly not just 'water vapor'. it acts quite differently... creating a diffused haze of lasting fog across the sky...
one thing i've been discussing lately is that this chemtrail activity is actually probably more of a water quality concern than even as much of an air quality one.
after heavy metals are hosed into the air, i would guess that they fall somewhat quickly, or eventually get washed down with rain, filling up and polluting the ground and tap water supplies.
my most recent 'near death' experience with detoxification happened right after i began filtering my water for chemical and heavy metal pollutants.
am feeling much sharper and clearer now as a result of the filtration.
am also actively growing and accumulating more indoor plants.
my friends...
we must grow our own air.
plants are masters of this.

consider getting yourself a gravity fed water filter.
major brands include british berkefeld (doulton) and the american made aqua rain.
there is also a cool tiny travel model available known as the doulton gss mini.
the aqua rain system comes with marathon filters. these filters have very small pores which enhances microbial elimination, as well as a detoxifying carbon core.
the 'berkey' models come with chemically absorbant black filters, while the 'british berkefeld' use super sterasyl ceramic filters.
berkey pf-2 filters go further to absorb fluoride and arsenic from water.
all good stuff to learn and use.
why buy bottled water?

here's a list of health tips ::
1) eat seaweed - seaweed is the most potent detoxifying food known. it binds with heavy metals and pulls them safely out of the body. don't over do it! they are strong...
2) eat raw garlic - raw garlic is one of the most efficient immune boosters. it must be eaten raw (with other foods to make it bearable) and chewed to properly get it into the blood stream. raw garlic knocks out any kind of bacterial / microbial infection quite quickly.
3) eat raw greens - dark leafy greens like kale and collards are loaded with antioxidants, the stuff that prevents and reverses cancer. full of minerals and vitamins, these should be a dietary staple. raw smoothies made with bananas, fruits, and raw greens are fantastic for breakfast. massage them with a bit of celtic sea salt and add them to salads!
4) eat mostly raw & organic foods - foods in their most natural state are the best all around for health. much less likely to be genetically modified, irradiated, covered in pesticides, or full of petroleum based fertilizers. much higher in all nutrients. soak / sprout all grains, beans, nuts, and seeds...
5) go vegan / vegetarian - reduce / eliminate animal foods from your diet. meat and dairy are much higher in toxins than plant-based foods, they speed the aging process, and unless they are sustainably raised, are more environmentally destructive. eating animal foods also increases the possiblity of food poisoning.
6) eliminate refined sugar - eat fresh fruits instead of cane sugar / corn syrup based sweets! refined sugar greatly damages the immune system and teeth. more healthy alternatives to refined sugar include agave or maple syrup. for a sweet kick, whole fruit, dates, or berries are best.
7) filter your water - use filtered / distilled water for cooking, drinking, and washing vegetables. too much distilled water use is commonly thought to be harmful, but highly detoxifying in limited amounts. check out british berkefeld gravity fed filters...
8) drink kombucha - intensely healthy tonic of fermented tea loaded with beneficial bacteria such as lactobacilli. excellent for digestion, immunity, and detoxification. other great choices include beet kvas, sauerkraut, miso, or kimchi. get into fermenting at home!
9) exercise - martial arts, yoga, hiking, dancing, hot sex :) ... anything that's low impact that can get your heart beating and sweat rolling will keep toxins moving through. boosts immunity and overall well being.
10) meditate - give healing inner attention to all organs and cells. reduce stress. focus on the breath and on your feelings. go deeper. it's best to do a little bit on a regular basis than a lot once in a while.
11) sunbathe - particularly naked sunbathing, increases immunity, boosts hormone levels, and prevents cancer. reduce oil consumption while sunbathing and completely eliminate hydrogenated oil. in moderate amounts and in combination with a healthy diet, sunbathing is extremely healing, tonifying, and uplifting.
12) take cold showers - known by natives as very purifying, cold showers cause the pores to squeeze shut, thus expelling toxins. tones and tightens the figure. cold showers causes one to shower less and pull less toxins in from tap water. install a shower filter!
13) use umeboshi - a pickled japanese plum, renowned for it's medicinal qualities. a blood purifier, digestive alkalizer, and effective headache remedy.
14) buy / grow houseplants - particularly palms, indoor plants detoxify the air and raise oxygen levels. if you live in a city, this is particularly important. create your own mini-paradise!
15) keep windows open at night - helps clear indoor air-borne toxins and bring in negative ions (energy). especially important in rooms with electronic / electrical equipment which creates positively charged air. breathe fresh air all night!
16) use natural body products / or none - soap and chemicals can disrupt the natural bacterial / oil balance of the skin and hair. try eliminating their use, or using a natural alternative.
17) fall in love - affection, romance, and passion are extreme immune boosters. live in bliss! love!
18) sing - release your feelings in song! helps overcome any obstacle.
19) communicate - speak your truth to others. be honest with yourself and everyone. be courageous, open, and free.
20) give - share what you can. release old items that are of no use. build networks of support. walk in compassion.

this is by far the best job eye have ever had, working with some of the most amazing people eye have ever met, doing the most advanced and interesting things imaginable.
simply too much to explain right now...
eye am in total bliss!
on a more sad note, the young girls that we were looking at adopting have been returned to their mother, at her request.
this has been especially difficult for emma, who bonded quite strongly with them.
we're both rapidly moving on, taking ourselves to a new level of being.
all in all, everything is going extremely well for us right now.

been an insane, wonderful, horrible, beautiful few weeks.
first, ema and eye have just assumed guardianship of two young girls, aged three and six!
what an incredible gift and responsibility!
suddenly, we're a family, and eye am a father!
taking in these girls instantly created controversy with our former position, so we were forced to leave. been hard on every level, physically, emotionally, and financially...
at this time, we need your support more than ever.
please donate!
of course, we know we're doing the right thing. :)
actually, these children have chosen us.
you know, hawaii is a rugged, wild place to live. feels like we're just getting the hang of things.
harvested some wild bananas and citrus today. when life hands you lemons, make lemonade with raw honey! ^_^
in other news...
jamendo was just recently mentioned in newsweek by professor lawrence lessig, a great moment for all!
seems that the 'mainstream media' is looking more and more our way...
excitment abounds.

yesterday, eye caught two wild ocean fish using a fishing pole made from the center of a large dry palm leaf. ate some fish raw, then cooked the rest using a small rocket stove.
this morning, woke up at dawn, meditated, stretched out on the beach, then got fairly scraped up while climbing a coconut tree for a cleansing drink of coconut water mixed with fresh lime juice from foreged local limes.
you know...
put the lime in the coconut!
just read in my mini sas survival guide that it's easier to climb coconut trees, or any narrow tree, if you tie a strip of cloth between your feet to grip the trunk as you ascend. will have to give this a shot soon. have got a nice stash of coconuts now to last me awhile.
after over two wonderful weeks of solid beach camping, we're back in 'civilization' for a bit, staying with various friends. tonight it's a lovely tropical home filled with buddhas and fine art.
looking forward to more vocal recording soon. will need to have our equipment sent from the mainland. might try a demo or two with my portable headset mic.

friends...
very amazing discoveries for me in the food realm lately...
as you probably know, been thriving for this past month on an entirely raw diet.
many days, have been eating little more than some raw leafy greens and a couple fruits.
what's stunning is how well eye feel on this very simple diet.
so much energy, vitality on every level...
been lifting weights, doing yoga, kung fu forms, actually been much more physically active than ever.
here are some conclusions ::
we can live for very long periods of time, perhaps indefinitely, on a very simple diet of raw leafy greens, fruits, vegetables, and soaked / sprouted seeds and nuts.
as mentioned earlier, this food is extremely detoxing. my first couple days were intense, along with a couple weeks of mucus in the stools, a shrinking and trimming of the gut, and an actual reversal of the aging process.
shockingly, am looking younger.
wild greens and fruits are found everywhere!
dandelion, plantain, clover, lamb's quarters, and a spectrum of wild greens abound.
during any food shortage, any wild edible greens can give you nutrients to survive.
it's even perhaps possible to live on blades of grass. haven't actually tried this yet... soon. :)
cooking is hardly necessary, even destructive to the value of the food.
as mentioned in an earlier food post, this was one of my last 'uncharted dietary territories'.
a tremendous success!
in a nutshell, this is basically a primate diet, much like our closest animal relative.
join me and the rest of the animal kingdom!
how is it that horses, cows, bulls, deer, moose, and a number of other large mammals get so healthy on diet of mostly raw greens?
think about it.
we're not all that different....
yes friends, we did indeed evolve from animals.
adam and eve ate green plants. :)

for the last week or so, my wife and eye have been eating completely raw foods, totally vegan.
for me, this has been one of my last 'uncharted territories' of dietary modification.
must say that the results so far have been totally amazing.
after a couple days of uncomfortable detox, including mild headaches, restlessness during sleep, and slight skin breakouts, my energy has just multiplied tenfold!
waking up feeling absolutely great these days, feeling an abundance of energy, even right after eating.
my flexibility is increasing, my memory retention is advancing, my sex drive is 'on the rise' (lol), my meditations are deeper, and my relationship with everyone is improving...
we're really on to something here and planning on continuing with this practice. the initial results are stunning. will be interesting to see how things go over the long run.
through this process, we've begun connecting with lots of people who are committed to this practice. their health, vitality, and commitment is speaking volumes...
as we collect more experience, we will share all of our discoveries with everyone.
|
tip of the day :: |
eat fresh organic fruits. plenty of them. blended or whole.
eat lots of raw greens, either blended with fruit as a 'green smoothie' or chopped up into a olive oil / celtic sea salt / raw vegetable mix. we've been using primarily kale and collards. any leafy greens will do the trick!
eat avocados!
salads!
get some LIFE into your diet.
it will clean you out . . .
then it will bring YOU to life.

tip of the day :: |
when taking apart something complex, such as a laptop, create an actual size 'screw & part map'.
on a separate surface, one by one, arrange all of the removed pieces in relation to each other, mimicking their original position.
sometimes it takes a couple of these maps (one for each side).
the most challenging aspect of repairing something complicated is putting it back together after disassembly.
a map makes this easy.

call me grateful

eye see this light
minds so hateful

to the thankful part inside
there must be something
that gives meaning to your life

lots has happened since my last entry.

early tomorrow we will be singing an acoustic set together at the local farmers market.
was offline for a long time recently!
my laptop was giving having lots of difficulty, running extremely slow.
after lots of troubleshooting, discovered that a clogged heatsink, combined with intense desert heat, caused the bios to become corrupted. my cpu frequency was thrown off along with the cooling controls.
things are starting to work better after running a bootable cd flash bios reinstall, along with an badly needed internal cleaning.

this will be an intense album (far more than the last ones), filled with sound effects, lots of electronic noises, and sarcastic role playing. if you've been paying attention to the current demos, you've been getting a taste. looks like eye will be responsible for producing this one.

what an intense week.
once settled here, eye learned that emma was still in the middle of another relationship.
this was unknown to me and this week was a crazy emotional rollercoaster of the three of us working to sort things out.
the situation seems to have finally resolved, with emma and eye planning on selling the van and using the money to move together to hawaii.
feeling a little sad and shaken by it all, yet it looks like everything is going to work out in the long run.
really been quite a stretch of relationship chaos, which eye thought was coming to and end with my arrival here.
yet another indication of the dangers of expectations, as well as a clear sign of cultural transformations happening all around.
have a number of times lately wanted to give up and become a simple monk.
in other news, a new tryad store has spawned that handles international shipping. been getting a number of requests for this.
planning on recording again soon.

god damn this holy war

hypocrites and terror talk
9 1 1 was an inside job
just some sick master plan
dying in blood stained sand
how dare you threaten us
you think that you're so tough
all will be revealed today
you have real hell to pay
lies and crimes beyond belief
faithful flock is losing sheep
behive live with swarming bees
better pray get on your knees
dictators get a fucking clue
we are all through with you
will we ever comprehend
such greed
inside these men
darkness only turns to light
death only turns to life
war only turns to peace

woke up early, went on a walk in the woods, meditated next to flowing water, found a bunch more dried mugwort for firestarting, came home, and drank a large jar of local spring water mixed with fresh lemon juice.
haven't smoked cannabis for a while and am feeling much better as a result. enjoying more vivid and memorable dreams, a clearer mind, and waking up earlier. have more energy overall.
about to take a cold shower, do some naked naked sunbathing, and make a town trip to send out some packages via the post office.
special thanks to hanani from england and justin from canada for your generous support!
much love to you both.
rocket stoves and signed copies of the new tryad cd are on the way.
have decided to get back together with my wife. we have been talking a lot by phone lately.
both have been through a lot of changes since our separation and we've decided to give our relationship another try.
still need to fix my van to travel to her.
will be working on that.

tip of the day :: |
dear friends, please listen!
sustainability is our greatest imperative, our critical global challenge.
we each need to connect deeply with our own mental clarity, clean air, pure water, and healthy food.
we must invite plants and animals into our lives.
bees are dying in vast amounts, probably due to genetically modified crops which contain pesticides in their pollen.
if all the bees die, we are soon to follow, as our food crops will not be able to reproduce.
the time for apathy and ignorance is over.

transported soil yesterday from the chicken coop into the garden, got a bunch of sawdust from the local sawmill for use in humanure composting, rode a bike into town and held my second 'love riot' (standing in peak downtown traffic with a large sign that says 'i love you').
got the usual friendly, positive, uplifting responses. :)
today was spent doing dishes, cleaning the house, taking care of guinea pigs, and recording this and this.
emma just invited me to spend time on her new homesteading spot in arizona.
there are horses, a garden, and wilderness there.
sounds appealing.
|
tip of the day :: |
chickens make excellent composters!
when food scraps are placed in their area, they will eat what they can, tearing up and burying the rest, creating a rich soil for gardening.
chicken poop is also one of the best garden fertilizers found on this planet.

last night eye recorded a new demo, watched the great global warming swindle, slept, woke up, used the bucket, went for a long walk and meditation in the woods, found a discrete spot to enjoy some naked sunbathing, did some situps and pushups, picked some indian lettuce for the guinea pigs, some dandelion leaves for me, ate these along with some baby manzanita berries and fresh pine shoots, one egg from the chickens in the backyard (yolk raw, whites fried in a cast iron skillet with local raw organic butter and sea salt), smoked some recently dried mugwort.
100% local food this morning (except for the sea salt)!
just got a generous donation from hanani!

since the last post, my van was towed home in exchange for $20 and a rocket stove, chad left for his week long trip, our internet went down overnight, been cooking things like soaked lentils, brown rice, and corn tortillas, have masturbated twice, been shitting in a bucket,
took care of a bunch of personal organization, smoked some grass, sang, sang, and sang, rode my bike to town,
made some rocket stove deliveries, gave one away to a lovely cashier, bought some organic apples,
raw cheese, garlic, two heads of lettuce, and one onion, lemon, pear, banana, and avocado.
just received another extremely generous donation from
asclepius' daughter.
infinite gratitude and love to you my dear friend!
getting systems ready for more recording.

2007.03.26 :: monday :: 9:31am :: reflect :: question :: challenge

| thoughts :: |
let me start by saying that eye am a big advocate of open relationships.
in many ways, eye feel that open relationships represent our truest nature.
we all have the capacity (and sometimes the total desire) to love more than one person at once. anyone with an open heart and mind knows this is true.
this being said, eye also feel that honesty is absolutely vital. if you have feelings towards, or are sharing intimacy with multiple people, everyone involved should know about it. if everyone agrees, it can actually work!
for some reason, eye keep attracting women who are practicing open relationships without keeping their partners informed.
this is deceptive, misleading, dangerous, and opens the potential for much chaos and suffering.
come on girls . . .
get real.

on my keychain is a small canister of pepper spray.
in an emergency self defence situation, this could be quite valuable, while being less harmful than unleashing wing chun kung fu on someone.
as a side note, there are some interesting cell phone stun guns on the market.
would suck to forget and try and answer one, eh? :) |
one lover:: |
(on pepper spray, from wiki)
"For those with asthma, taking other drugs, or subject to restraining techniques which restrict the breathing passages, there is a risk of death. The Los Angeles Times has reported at least 61 deaths associated with police use of pepper spray since 1990 in the USA [Los Angeles Times June 18, 1995], and the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) documented 27 deaths in custody of people sprayed with peppergas in California alone, since 1993. [ACLU, Oleoresin Capsicum, - Pepper Spray Update, More Fatalities, More Questions, June, 1995, p. 2.]
... the US Army concluded in a 1993 Aberdeen Proving Ground study that pepper spray could cause "Mutagenic effects, carcinogenic effects, sensitization, cardiovascular and pulmonary toxicity, neurotoxicity, as well as possible human fatalities. There is a risk in using this product on a large and varied population" (Salem, 1993) However, the pepper spray got the go ahead despite the reservations of the US military scientists after FBI tests gave it the all clear. It has subsequently been revealed that the head of the FBI's Less-Than lethal Weapons Programme, Special Agent Thomas WW Ward, took a $57,000 bribe from a peppergas manufacturer to give the Zarc product Capstun, the all clear."
Perhaps a non-violent form of Deja Fu could be used.

my first online rocket stove sale just came in!
anyone else want one?
an inexpensive, vital alternative technology.
last night, after telling naomi that eye am feeling lonely, she replied ::
'loneliness is the human condition though..... embrace it.'
here's my response ::
'actually, loneliness is a very unusual condition for me.
most of my life has been spent in groups, or involved in close relationships.
even in meditation.
can't agree that loneliness is 'the human condition'.
it's a common feature of the 'modern condition', which coincides with every other destructive element of this society.
traditional cultures always contained frequent and constant human contact.
we all crave it. it's our nature.
being isolated like caged animals into separate compartments is something very new and unusual.
my life's work is to transform and reverse this trend.
won't last long anyway.
it's our 'modern society' that's disposable, not ancient intuition.
just a matter of time... :)'

tip of the day :: |
most headaches are caused by blood vessels in the brain being overly expanded or yin.
expanded blood vessels put pressure on surrounding tissues and cause pain, thus, a headache.
this is usually caused by expansive foods such as sugar, alcohol, pharmaceutical drugs, or via petrochemical exposure.
to balance, shrink the blood vessels by taking in contractive elements, such as sea salts, seaweeds (which also pull heavy metals from the body), or animal based foods such as eggs, fish, or meat.
all of these are known as having a yang effect.
my favorite headache remedy is umeboshi, a salty, pickled japanese plum.

indeed, beauty takes many forms.

apparently, my mother thinks that viewing simple, artistic photographs of body parts, including female genitalia, constitutes visiting 'the dark side' of life, with the belief that open nudity promotes rape, and pedophilia.
the truth is, states and countries that are the most restricted from access to 'pornography', also have the highest rates of rape and sexual brutality.
our naked bodies are not the enemy.
suppression and disconnection from nature is.

one of the best ways to stay warm is to wear a knitted wool hat.
called a beanie, or 'tuque' (pronouced 'took', like 'spook') up in canada, these hats help keep your whole body warm, as most body heat exits through the head.
i wear an inexpensive black military version known as a watch cap. they can be found at virtually any army / navy surplus shop.

been quite a long time since i've posted.
we've just finished up recording two videos for the upcoming release of the new t r y ^ d album. can't wait to see the results. the videos will be made available online once they are finished.
things are shifting for us yet again and soon we'll be moving further north.
i've decided to perfect the art of remaining mobile. what is the point of spending all of your life's effort simply to pay rent? if you are poor, i say, do as i do. invest in mobile living and you'll be spending money towards what you directly own, not paying for time in space.
the more i look at it, i see our current money system as yet another form of slavery. people who have money control the actions of those who don't.
i hope someday this situation will change, or at least become more balanced.
not just for me, but for all.

i've determined that i would never want to live in a city ever again.
the entire operation of a city feels so overly busy, complex, and draining.
on the streets, it is so sad to see the countless homeless, the addicted, and the insane.
my commitment to remain mobile and close to the wilderness has been renewed.
|
| tip of the day :: |
i've been making sauerkraut lately. it's easy!
shred some cabbage, put it in a large bowl, and sprinkle a bunch of celtic sea salt all over it. with your hands, mix and roughly crush the salt into the cabbage until it becomes very watery. place the whole mess into a crock, jar, or bowl. push the cabbage down until it's covered with water and place something heavy on top to keep it down, such as a plate with a clean rock on it, or a pitcher filled with water. let it sit at room temperature for around 3 days.
once it's finished, it's best to place it in a sealed jar and store it in a cool dark place. fridges or cool cupboards are fine.
home-made sauerkraut is filled with lactobacillus, an extremely healthy bacterium which boosts immune systems and promotes digestion.

what a stunning whirlwind the last couple of days have been.
nearly divorced my wife, lost my home, and moved to los angeles.
happy to report that we've survived and grown substantially closer from the experience.

a series of challenges to grow from.

i have just discovered and am experimenting with dietary guidelines of the weston a. price foundation. i am totally blown away by how much better i am feeling already. if this keeps up, i'm going to continue switching over from my general macrobiotic practice.
| | vital discovery! :: |
soak or sprout all grains, nuts, seeds, and beans before cooking or eating. period.
doing this makes them extremely more digestable by neutralizing enzyme inhibitors, tannins, and phytic acid.
it's also much better to use fresh, whole nuts and seeds. most seeds and nuts available in butters and in granola are slightly rancid.

was a wonderful play and the house was totally packed.
today we've had a number of friends over, with their lovely babies.
after an excellent dinner, we all swam in the creek and painted ourselves up with natural rock pigment paints.
the sun is going down now, upon a very splendid day.

to dialup to the net using my ubuntu system, i first use the command 'pppconfig' in the gnome terminal to setup my account. once an account is setup, i connect via the command 'pon [hostname]'. to disconnect, i simply type 'poff'. this is an obvious technical abbreviation for 'piss off'. ;)

decided lately to experiment with a bit more animal and vegetable based foods in my diet and less carbohydrates.
been experiencing a mild candida overgrowth, probably due to the excessive grains i consume, along with my tendency to be internally acidic.
probably the best thing for me to do is amp up my vegetable intake. doing this has saved my life in the past.
still actively moving into our new home. very happy to be here.

don't be afraid to be honest. by being open and sharing our experiences with eachother, we are able to learn and grow. healing, evolution, and positive change always begins with seeing things exactly as they are. when we do this, we are able to work with realities, not desired illusions. friends, be bold. speak truth for the benefit of all.

been practicing the art of firemaking with a hand drill. success with this method is much more difficult than with a bow drill. as such, i have yet to actually make fire with it. been getting very close and seeing lots of smoke.
for the drill, i've been using seasoned mock orange and dead stalks of mullein. for the hearth, i've been using dried branches of cedar. for the tinder bundle, nothing beats old dry mugwort hanging around from the previous year. i can't go hiking anymore without compulsively collecting the stuff.

just had the most wonderful weekend!
one of my best friends is visiting for a number of days.
went to a huge outdoor potluck and chatted around a fire with a brilliant young engineer involved with twenty others who are designing a personal flying vehicle known as a gyrocopter. the stars were vast and beautiful. the conversation was facinating. apparently, flying cars are going to be available soon. local fire and police departments will be the first to get them.
ended up singing with a group of spirited musicians. the place was filled with radio djs.
due to a friendly connection, t r y ^ d is about to be featured on the largest public radio station in this region, one that covers much of northern california, including the bay area. very exciting!
been very hot lately. rivers are such a blessing. |

if we are patient, diligent, and open to change, our wildest dreams are possible.
we are never stuck. bottom line is, someday, we are all going to die.
we might as well live according to our highest ideals.
right here and now, after years of work and searching, my dreams are coming true. |
| tip of the day :: |
on the topic of diet relating to health, there are three very important systems to understand.
these are yin/yang, acid/alkaline, and digestive microbial balance.
yin/yang refers to the contracted or expanded state of our body (blood vessels, cells, etc), acid/alkaline is our internal ph, and the microbial is our living intestinal bacteria 'ecosystem'. all of these need to be in optimal balance for best health. i've been working with all three. each is extremely valuable.
by making dietary adjustments with these understandings, i've been able to cure myself repeatedly of any ill conditions, some of which were declared incurable by 'modern' western doctors. in a nutshell, don't trust 'em. look deeply at your own lifestyle.

beginning to notice a number of people taking on a healthier lifestyle lately.
just heard from s1xpounder, who has asked me for some recipes. due to this request, i've been inspired to keep a more detailed record of what i eat, beyond breakfast.
i've got over a decade of experience with natural foods cooking.
really wonderful to hear that there's more interest in it. |
| tip of the day :: |
my basic diet consists of grains, vegetables, and beans, with lots of varieties of food beyond that. i've done a lot of macrobiotic study. macrobiotics has a certain japanese bias, yet using it as a base, i've been able to create a custom diet for myself, one that i no longer need a measuring cup for.
my favorite macrobiotic resource is aveline kushi's cookbook.
a good online recipe source is the pure core.
chew well! *_*

we have the whole house to ourselves this week. everyone is off travelling.
this opens up lots of time and space to record.
we should be finished with the second t r y ^ d album very soon.
looking forward to sharing it with you.
tip of the day :: just recently, we discovered a huge supply of wild native sage. we've begun to wrap fresh sage bundles with thin hemp string and hang them to dry. burning sage bundles as an incense is purifying and relaxing in most any environment.
it is so hard to find decent, non-toxic incense these days. this native sage is an absolute blessing from the plant world. feeling grateful.

john holowach and i have been having a lively debate regarding the merits and risks of sunbathing.
my apologies for the lousy link i had previously featured for that. i need to research my links better.
for anyone interested in this subject, i highly recommend the book sunlight by dr. kime.
basically, the sun is very healthy for you unless you happen to eat a lot of refined and hydrogenated oils.
if you sunbathe, it's also important to increase your intake of whole grains and vegetables. these contain antioxidants that prevent the creation of, or harm from, cancer causing free radicals.
when i sunbathe, exercise, and eat natural foods, my body becomes beautiful and healthy. this is my direct experience.
tip of the day :: speaking of the sun, if you don't have one, get yourself a clothes line! why burn up energy on hot days with a mechanical drier when you can dry your clothes for free? your clothes will smell fresher, the colors will not fade, and your clothes will last longer. just make sure you shake them out before folding. when i was younger, i put on pants containing yellow jackets. ever seen me dance? well, that's how i learned. :)

i decided this morning that i'm going to try a fast this week.
my very good friend aaron has been doing the master cleanser and feels great.
sean kennedy often raves about it.
i think my system could use a day or two of the fast. we'll see how it goes.
pig-monkey just returned from a weekend wilderness survival course.
congratulations and welcome home!
tip of the day :: lemon water is very refreshing to drink on hot days and replaces lost electrolytes. i keep a number of glass water bottles around filled with the stuff.

today we put up a tipi on a piece of property that we are going to caretake this summer.
the land here is very nice, with a lovely river running through it. i'm writing you now from this property.
been more committed lately to bring my laptop wherever i go.
feels increasingly more like a part of me.
tip of the day :: deer brush and blackberry vines make excellent baskets. they are best harvested in the winter when they are less brittle. to easily prepare blackberry vines, make a hole in a short branch of wood and pull the vines back and forth through it, stripping off the leaves and thorns. to make harvested vines more flexible, soak them in water.
2006.06.17 :: saturday :: 4:03pm :: heart :: love :: loyalty

breakfast ::
boiled rolled oats cooked with well water and sea salt. served with raisins and toasted sesame seed butter hand-ground in a suribachi. all organic and cooked on flame.
there's no better service you can give this world than to take care of yourself.
the bottom line is, to be alive is to be addicted to something.
the only question is whether your addictions are healthy or unhealthy.
may we all work on developing the healthy ones and losing the latter.
tip of the day :: cast iron cookware is wonderful! because cast iron spreads heat evenly, it is perfect for roasting nuts and seeds. when washing cast iron, use little or no soap. then place the pan on a lit stove for a short time to dry. this will prevent rusting. to condition a rusted pan, scrub the rust off with water and steel wool, cover with vegetable oil, then bake for a while. you can often find decent cast iron cookware at thift stores, garage sales, and antique markets.
getting a little iron in your food is healthy. especially for vegans.

today we're going down to the river. just found the most beautiful spot.
last night, scott waddell inspired me to update my journal more regularly.
i'll do my best to start posting daily again.
tip of the day :: cook your beans with small pieces of kombu. doing this improves digestibility and makes beans less prone to produce their famous gassy effects. makes for better relationships! *_*

my wife and i are in a new home, a much calmer space.
much more music friendly. we're living with other musicians now.
today was spent in total bliss with children playing free.
we learned so much about the plants that live with us here.
tip of the day :: we are never trapped. although sometimes it is hard to see the way out of something, or the solution to a problem, resolution is always just waiting to happen.
and it does.

was just laying naked under a beautiful green lush tree, looking up at small crisp clouds passing through the deepest blue sky.
then i thought i should go tell the internet about it.
why can't we all be this free?
does life really need to be so complicated?
tip of the day :: found this tidbit online for a friend ::
"as a general bug repellent, eat garlic, chives, leeks, or onions. these work best when eaten raw in a salad or just slightly cooked.
also, there are three different versions for each. you can buy it from the conventional store, organic food store or eat homegrown from the garden. the best of the 3 choices is homegrown, these foods contain a lot more nutrition in them and a little goes a long way.
garlic, especially, has antifungal, antivirus, antimicrobial and antibacterial powers."
ahh, the many wonders of garlic.
eat it, get stinky, and other living creatures will avoid you.

yes indeed, my journal has moved a bit. just for clarity.
much love & light to you!
thanks for tuning in . . .

tip of the day :: if you're looking at buying a new computer, consider getting a laptop. aside from the obvious gains of portability, which allows for remote wifi access, you have the added benefits of an instant battery backup supply and an lcd screen. the battery filters the incoming electricity and protects you from power surges, noise, and outages. the lcd screen saves your eyes in comparison to common crt screens.
i'm currently running a toshiba that was donated to me as a gift for my non-profit work.

tip of the day :: go buy a bottle of juice, preferably organic unsweetened. drink it! be sure to share. remove the label and keep the glass container as your new 'water bottle'. try to keep this bottle filled with drinking water and available to you at all times. create your own carrying case for it!

tip of the day :: bees are beautiful creatures that provide us with many excellent things. it's safe to softly pet them sometimes, especially when they're busy harvesting from flowers. i do so love bees.
in our home, we only burn palm wax or beeswax candles. commonly used paraffin is known as a toxic mineral oil. combined with artificial scents and colors often added, along with even some of them using lead wicks, many people are burning quite unhealthy candles.

(yes, i'm repeating myself)
2006.04.14 :: friday
meditation :: nearly constant vipassana
exercise :: house cleaning / sweeping / stretching / hot shower
breakfast :: native road-killed deer soup made with local squash and wild greens. onion and olive oil stir-fried millet. baby raw wild chickweed and indian lettuce (they were here first). all organic, made with well water, sea salt, and cooked on flame.
today we're learning how to weave baskets using local willow shoots.
last night there was a tranformational gathering here, the beginning of a regular dancing circle.
i'm tired of words, tired of masks.
silence understands.
tip of the day :: singing bowls rock!
bring one to a gathering of friends (or even a party), sit, breathe, and lightly strike it once in a while. the effects are amazing.
any kind of portable chimes can be wonderful things to carry.
powerful psychic tools indeed.
fyi :: for some reason the 2006.04.11 entry was lost.
goodbye.

i'm going use them to make some bone tools.
just bought a really excellent book on the subject called practicing primitive by steven watts.
on my walk, i also discovered a small fresh-water spring.
all wonderful gifts.
tip of the day :: if you're running a gnu/linux operating system like my ubuntu system, and you need to know what is happening over your network, the small console program iftop can be useful.
the command i use to view traffic over my dialup connection is 'iftop -i ppp0'.
for ethernet, i replace 'ppp0' with 'eth0'. for wireless, i use 'ath0'.

exercise :: 2 mile hike with dog / pushups / light weight lifting / floor sweeping / stretching / hot shower
breakfast :: oatmeal garnished with raisins and almond butter. all organic, made with filtered water, a pinch of sea salt, and cooked on flame.
the very first leaf buds of the oak trees broke open today.
change is always happening.
sometimes this fact is more obvious than others.
today i'm seeing spring for the first time.
tip of the day :: for our community garden, we're starting with a technique known as weedless gardening.
the weedless gardening book is a good permaculture primer.
basically, this method doesn't till.
it builds a fertile soil naturally, from the top down.
2006.04.01 :: saturday
meditation :: rested in breath & sensation consciousness most of the day
exercise :: sweeping the floors / stretching / cat cuddling / hot shower

w h o a r e y o u?
awareness ~ always ~ presence
love.
tip of the day :: wooden pallets make great home-scale compost bins. you can find them behind any large grocery store. for my bin, i use a pallet on each side (except the bottom), making a complete box, including a hinged lid. the entire inside is of the bin is lined with tightly woven steel fencing to keep out small animals. this is especially important with humanure composting.
be sure to layer your compost pile with straw, crushed leaves, or grasses.
composting is easy!
just add and cover.
2006.03.30 :: thursday
meditation :: 2 hour breath, ajna concentration, and vipassana
exercise :: 1 mile mountain hike / 2 hours of play with children / stretching / hot shower
breakfast :: soaked overnight and soft-cooked short grain brown rice garnished with raisins, lightly toasted sunflower seeds, and almond butter. all organic, made with well water, a pinch of sea salt, and cooked on flame.
been mostly relaxing this week, getting lots of needed rest.
taught another children's wilderness class today and had lots of fun running around the woods.
lit another bow drill fire.
last sunday we volunteered for a huge krishna das event. a few hundred people attended. was quite a nice experience.
my grandmother is feeling better now.
life is such a gift.
feeling endlessly grateful.
tip of the day :: my favorite pocket knife is a leatherman. containing so many tools, i find them vastly useful. unlike a swiss army knife, all leatherman blades and tools lock, which is an absolutely vital safety feature. i usually carry one with me at all times.
2006.03.24 :: friday
meditation :: 1 hour breath, ajna concentration, and vipassana
exercise :: 1 mile mountain hike / whole house cleaning / stretching / hot shower
breakfast :: oatmeal garnished with raisins and raw nut butter. all organic, made with filtered water, a pinch of sea salt, and cooked on flame.
things are starting to settle down.
our first wedding photo gallery is now online, with more to come.
just heard that my grandmother has entered the hospital.
while visiting with grandmom recently, i had the sense that this might happen. our love and thoughts are with her.
we are extremely blessed with such a wonderful family, which keeps growing even larger with marriages and young babies.
a new radio show and more music is indeed on the way.
feeling calm and warmly content.
tip of the day :: plastic white buckets are very useful. from cleaning, to compost, to food storage (along with the lids), there never seems to be enough of these buckets around. you can often get them for free, or little charge, from donut shops and restaurants of all kinds. if you can, try to locate buckets with thin lids that are easy to take on and off.
2006.03.16 :: thursday
meditation :: 33 minute breath, ajna concentration, and vipassana
exercise :: 33 minute elliptical training / stretching / cold shower

what can one say?
our wedding was entirely beyond words.
many photos will be online soon.
so much love, so much healing, so much connection...
limitless thanks to all!
last night we sang to over a hundred diksha meditators.
today is another children's wilderness class.
tonight we're in the studio to record the golden sun round.
life is beautiful and grand.
ps :: hi hank! *_*

love is who and what we really are.

tonight is my first experience of singing for a diksha gathering.
just learned a number of traditional sanskrit songs for the event.
my marriage with emma is quickly approaching.
we're expecting anywhere from sixty to a hundred people to be here.
what an honor.
tip of the day :: acorns were a main food staple of native peoples. after leaching out the bitter tannins and cooking, i find them to be delicious. soon i will buy this book.
2006.02.14 :: tuesday
meditation :: 1 hour breath, ajna concentration, and vipassana
exercise :: 1 mile mountain hike / morning sex / trampoline jumping / dog chasing / stretching / hot bath
breakfast :: soaked & soft-cooked basmati brown rice garnished with raisins and peanut butter. all organic, made with filtered water, and cooked on a rocket stove.
such beautiful days!
our second children's wilderness skills class went perfectly. all of the original children are completely dedicated and more are interested.
the first class we taught about shelter.
the second class was centered on fire. with help from the children, i was able to ignite a fire with a bow drill quickly, on the first try.
the upcoming third class we will learn about water.
we will use coals from the fire to burn and scrape out a bowl-shaped container into a fallen log to hold water. then we will drop hot rocks from the fire pit into the water to boil it for purification.
we'll also cover how to get water when there are no obvious sources around.
all basic native tech. shouldn't everyone know this?
our wedding is coming up.
invitations go out tomorrow.
community is forming here.
our home is heavenly.
everything is simply flying.
tip of the day :: relax. life is something to slow down and savor.
2006.02.04 :: saturday
meditation :: 40 minute breath, ajna concentration, and vipassana
exercise :: 1 mile forest hike / situps / pushups / weight lifting / aikido exercises / kung fu forms / cold shower
breakfast :: soft-cooked millet garnished with raisins and peanut butter. all organic, made with filtered water, and cooked on flame.
on thursday, i taught my first wilderness survival skills class to 11 children, ages ranging from 6 to 12.
together we built a large lean-to debrit hut under a large, beautiful manzanita tree.
we all had a really wonderful time running around the woods collecting fallen branches and leaves.
next week i'll be teaching the children how to light a fire with a bow drill.
pig-monkey recently informed me of a great collection of information known as in the wake.
highly recommended for download and printing!
tip of the day :: when building any kind of shelter, even a conventional home, be sure to consider placing the entrance and windows facing the south-east. this way, you catch the warming first rays of sun as the morning dawns.
2006.01.31 :: tuesday
meditation :: 1 hour breath, ajna concentration, and vipassana
exercise :: 1 mile forest run / situps / pushups / pullups / aikido exercises / kung fu forms / hot shower
breakfast :: boiled rolled oats garnished with raisins and peanut butter. all organic, made with filtered water, and cooked on flame.
so many things are happening.
first of all, emma and i are getting married!
our wedding date is set for march 11th. after 3 years together, it's about time.
we're now living in a lush, wonderful home on the top of a pine forest mountain.
plenty of recording ability is now available to us.
lastly, our cat and co-pilot, bella has recently passed away.
emma has put up a gallery honoring bella.
our time in this form is limited.
let's make it count.
tip of the day :: much of our language has violence inherent within it. i've begun to study a form of non-violent communication. i'm finding this to be a very powerful tool.
behind every insult, there is a need trying to be fulfilled. reveal the need and you'll find the solution.
2006.01.22 :: sunday
meditation :: 2 hour breath, ajna concentration, and vipassana
exercise :: 2 mile forest hike / hot shower
breakfast :: boiled rolled oats garnished with raisins, soy milk, and a touch of maple syrup. all organic, made with filtered water, and cooked on flame.
tonight was my second experience of a diksha gathering.
cried very hard. so much is being released. intense healing.
it's been too long away from this place, my home.
i've travelled around the world, made a lot of noise, and learned quite a lot in the process.
coming back to the sierra nevada mountains is like returning to a previous life, a vague memory of who i once was.
i'm in love all over again.
tip of the day :: don't fight what is, create alternatives! if you don't like something, it is your duty to develop a replacement. complaints just don't cut it. get creative!
2006.01.17 :: tuesday
meditation :: 1 hour breath, ajna concentration, and vipassana
exercise :: 1 mile forest hike / hot shower
breakfast :: soft-cooked short grain brown rice. garnished with lightly toasted sunflower seeds and a touch of maple syrup. all organic, made with local spring water, and cooked on flame.
roots are vital.
the only way a tree is able to climb higher in the sky is by digging deeper roots into the soil.
we humankind must do the same.
we must work towards our collective survival, sharing with others what we learn along the way.
we must regain balance with the natural world and preserve what remains.
as we soar sky high, we must grow more roots.
tip of the day :: just discovered natural silk and beeswax dental floss. always wondered what replacements exist for plastic floss. i'm told that silk is not entirely humane, as it exploits the labor of worms, so keep that in mind. *_*
i've made ropes from the dried stalks of fireweed and milkweed. oddly enough i can say that i've actually once used it as a floss. never thought of adding beeswax though. great idea.
2006.01.14 :: saturday
meditation :: 1 hour breath, ajna concentration, and vipassana
exercise :: none today
breakfast :: erewhon brown rice cream served plain. boiled with mountain spring water and all organic.
today we met with julia butterfly hill.
we thanked julia for being a part of the inspiration for our most popular song of all time, healing luna.
julia was given two solo cds, a copy of public domain, and a homemade card from emma.
was a wonderful and uplifting gathering.
we even cried some.
tip of the day :: one person can change this entire world. don't ever think you are powerless. quite the opposite. we all have more power than we could possibly imagine.
2006.01.13 :: friday
meditation :: 2 hour breath, ajna concentration, and vipassana in the woods
exercise :: 1 mile forest hike / tree climbing / pushups / pullups / cold shower
breakfast :: soft-cooked rolled oats served with raisins and lightly roasted sunflower seeds. boiled with mountain spring water, all organic, and cooked on flame.
air is so vital.
air is life.
oxygen is consciousness.
everything is consciousness.
tip of the day :: love and let go. give yourself to this river of life. we are merely a very small part of this infinite whole.
2006.01.09 :: monday
meditation :: 1 hour breath, ajna concentration, and vipassana (in the woods!)
exercise :: 1 mile forest run / 1 mile walk / pushups / situps / hot shower
breakfast :: erewhon brown rice cream served with raisins and roasted sunflower seeds. boiled with mountain spring water and all organic.
last night was my first experience of a diksha gathering.
wonderful.
prior to that, spent some of the day meditating down by a huge river.
the way the sun sparkles and reflects off churning bubbles is dazzling.
feeling at home again.
tip of the day :: clean those chakras! our inner state completely determines our entire life. turn your attention within and bring peace there. for the love of all things, heal yourself.
2006.01.07 :: saturday
greetings from the sierra nevada mountains!
the air here is wonderful. the people are so kind.
trees here are huge!
it's great to be back in the land where i was raised.
wonderful to see my friends again.
hopefully i'll be able to get my daily routine going soon.
tip of the day :: for indoor air quality, get some houseplants! members of the palm family are some of the most top rated plants for reducing pollution and contributing oxygen. if you can, live in or near the woods. the atmosphere is vastly better than any city.
2006.01.04 :: thursday
today we're travelling to california.
many great old friends to connect with there.
our photo tour of arcosanti is now online.
tip of the day :: when drinking anything cold, hold it in your mouth until it warms up before swallowing. drinking cold liquid is shocking and unhealthy for the stomach.
2006.01.04 :: wednesday
meditation :: 20 minute breath, ajna concentration, and vipassana
exercise :: 1 mile walk / hot shower
breakfast :: brown rice and bean burrito. water sauteed broccoli. all organic.
sometimes in life we have to take a stand.
even though something may be difficult to face, we must do it.
admitting weaknesses and wounds can be very hard to do.
yet, it's the only way to heal.
tip of the day :: everyone should know the basics of life. probably the most primary skill we should know is how to make fire. i've got quite a nice bow drill set, extra water, and a rocket stove available at all times.
2005.12.31 :: saturday
meditation :: 20 minute breath, ajna concentration, and vipassana
exercise :: 1 mile run / 2 mile walk / yoga / cold shower
breakfast :: soft-cooked amaranth served with raisins, a touch of maple syrup, and a bit of soymilk. made with purified water and sea salt. all organic.
happy new year everyone!
may 2006 be a year of great change for the benefit of all.
we have lots of work to do.
let's stick together and live like we mean it.
tip of the day :: this journal page is slowly becoming a kind of 'virtual construct' of my mind. if you want to know my experience or thoughts on a particular subject, simply search this page for a keyword using your browser. if you don't find a match, just email me. if it's useful, i'll add the response here. *_*
2005.12.30 :: friday
meditation :: 40 minute breath, ajna concentration, and vipassana
exercise :: 1 mile run / 2 mile walk / situps / pushups / pullups / yoga / cold shower
breakfast :: soft-cooked millet boiled with diced onions and carrots. seasoned with a touch of mellow white miso and garnished with diced raw scallions. made with purified water and sea salt on a propane stove. all organic.
there's so much within that i need to purify.
i carry anger towards this society, frustration at the state of mankind.
i often feel caught in the maze of a modern nightmare.
as i am a part of this world too, my primary responsibility is to liberate myself.
only then might i be an effective vehicle for the liberation of others.
tip of the day :: nightshade vegetables are mildly poisonous. this includes such vegetables as potatoes, tomatoes, and eggplant. for optimum health, it's best to limit your intake of these vegetables. of the nightshades, i seem to be able to handle potatoes the best, but i still try not to overdo it.
2005.12.29 :: thursday
meditation :: 20 minute breath, ajna concentration, and vipassana
exercise :: 2 mile run / 2 mile walk / situps / pushups / pullups / aikido exercises / kung fu class / cold shower
breakfast :: lundberg golden rose medium grain brown rice nori rolls made with ume paste, raw scallions, and water sauteed broccoli and carrots. the rice was cooked with purified water and sea salt on a propane stove. all organic.
the earth, insects, animals, and plants
shows what i am
the sky, space, stars, and sun
shows what i am bound to become
tip of the day :: be free. live true to yourself. nature is your actual identity.
2005.12.28 :: wednesday
meditation :: 30 minute breath, ajna concentration, and vipassana
exercise :: morning sex / 1 mile run / 2 mile walk / situps / pushups / pullups / freezing cold shower
breakfast :: soft-cooked lundberg golden rose medium grain brown rice mixed with adzuki bean, onion, and kombu stew. made with purified water and sea salt. served with water sauteed broccoli and garnished with diced raw scallions. all organic.
the real work of life is our ability to live in accord with the universal.
at this stage, everything begins and ends with us.
how difficult is it to break unhealthy habits?
how easy is it to maintain balance?
we must be our own masters.
tip of the day :: as long as you are eating right, a moderate amount of sunlight is good for you!
a long time ago, i read a fantastic book titled sunlight by zane r. md, ms kime. it totally changed my views of sunlight exposure. this book states that skin cancer is more the fault of improper diet, specifically refined and hydrogenated oils.
is the sun really our enemy? what could be older than the sun?
2005.12.27 :: tuesday
meditation :: 10 minute breath, ajna concentration, and vipassana
exercise :: 1 mile run / 3 mile walk / situps / pushups / pullups / kung fu class / hot shower
breakfast :: soaked overnight and soft-cooked lundberg golden rose medium grain brown rice, boiled with purified water and sea salt. served with tahini and raisins. all organic.
sometimes this society feels strange to me.
seems like there are so many people running around chasing after silly things, totally asleep.
not that i really know all that much, i just can't understand why most people spend their life the way they do.
reminds me of some song lyrics from a good friend named paul ::
"i don't know what i'm going to do
but i know what i don't want to do
and for now
i guess that'll do."
tip of the day :: if you have a schedule to keep, it helps to have a timer handy for meditation. this way, you can set it for a certain amount of minutes and forget completely about time during the sit.
timers are common features of watches. you can also find cheap timers at any cooking supply store (just avoid the ticking ones). not only will a timer help ease your mind during meditation, it will also keep your grain from burning!
2005.12.26 :: monday
meditation :: 30 minute breath, ajna concentration, and vipassana
exercise :: 1 mile run / 3 mile walk / hot shower
breakfast :: left-over christmas seitan pot pie. all organic and homemade.
hope everyone had a great holiday. we certainly did.
just downloaded and watched an interesting film called the cyberpunk educator.
tip of the day :: if you're a geek like me, you've got some wires to deal with. the most simple and efficient cable ties i've found are common elastic hair bands. the thicker ones work best. they wrap up all of my cables for travel and storage. you can usually find them at any drug store or grocery.
2005.12.23 :: friday
meditation :: 40 minute breath, ajna concentration, and vipassana
exercise :: 1 mile run / 2 mile walk / situps / pushups / pullups / yoga / cold shower
breakfast :: soft-cooked millet (again!) served with tahini and ume plums. boiled with purified water and sea salt. cup of kukicha twig tea afterwards. all organic and cooked on a propane stove (gotta get my rocket stove fixed!)
congratulations to justin for being the first person to email for the free t r y ^ d cd.
you're our hero!
been reading the journal of pig monkey and it looks like he's checking out some of the macrobiotic stuff lately. very cool.
also, we landed in 5th place for the top 10 of 2005 on the latest revolution podcast. great music featured on it. check it out!
tip of the day :: for web searching, i use scroogle. it returns google search results free of their tracking. just gives me an extra sense of privacy. not like i'm a very private guy anyways... but oh well... :)
2005.12.22 :: thursday
meditation :: 1 hour breath, ajna concentration, and vipassana
exercise :: 2 mile run / 2 mile walk / aikido exercises / situps / pushups / pullups / kung fu class / cold shower
breakfast :: soft-cooked millet. boiled with purified water and sea salt. all organic and cooked on a propane stove.
usually the best solution for any problem is entirely obvious.
whenever you find yourself in a situation that needs resolution, take a step back and look for the most immediate remedy.
it's often right under your nose.
just got my first supply public domain cds in the mail. looks good!
the first person to email me with the code-word listen will be sent a signed copy for free.
tip of the day :: sometimes when i'm meditating and the mind is very busy, i count breaths. this is an exercise taught in zen training. i count each breath from one to ten and then start over again. if i ever lose track of the count, i patiently start over at one. after doing this long enough, the mind usually settles down enough to begin vipassana.
2005.12.20 :: tuesday
meditation :: 45 minute breath, ajna concentration, and vipassana
exercise :: 3 mile run! / 2 mile walk / aikido exercises / situps / pushups / pullups / kung fu class / cold shower
breakfast :: soaked overnight and soft-cooked forbidden rice. boiled with purified water and sea salt. served with an ume plum, nori, and diced raw scallions. all organic and cooked on a propane stove (i dropped my rocket stove this morning and it broke!).
thoughts from the tao ::
if you understand others you are smart.
if you understand yourself you are illuminated.
if you overcome others you are powerful.
if you overcome yourself you have strength.
if you know how to be satisfied you are rich.
tip of the day :: web design is a useful skill. to create a decent site, you will need to learn some html, css, and graphic design. you can find free tutorials online.
for web hosting, i like to use reseller accounts. this way, you can register a number of domain names and host many sites using only one account. my current choice of hosts is resellerzoom. they've been good to me.
2005.12.19 :: monday
meditation :: 45 minute breath, ajna concentration, and vipassana
exercise :: 1 mile run / 2 mile walk / cold shower
breakfast :: boiled rolled oats with sea salt. garnished with nori flakes and umeboshi plums. all organic.
sometimes you can't escape chaos.
every now and then, our world is bound to turn upside down.
it's all just a matter of how well we handle it and regain balance.
looking at my life, i would say that daily meditation is the most important thing i do.
by the way, i've just created myspace accounts for vavrek and t r y ^ d. feel free to visit. just be sure to keep your adblocker cranking.
tip of the day :: the brand of boots i currently wear are magnum stealth. i count a solid pair of rugged waterproof boots as one of my most vital physical possessions. if your feet aren't protected, good luck doing any kind of work.
as a side note, here's an interesting page describing how to make emergency sandals from used tires.
2005.12.18 :: sunday
meditation :: 30 minute breath, ajna concentration, and vipassana
exercise :: 1 mile stalking run / 2 mile walk / situps / pushups / cold shower
breakfast :: boiled rolled oats with sea salt. garnished with peanut butter and raisins. all organic and made with purified water.
there's nothing like personal organization.
once you have everything in your life organized, you are then much more capable of being a support to others.
even the smallest details should not go unnoticed.
tip of the day :: for web browsing, i use firefox with the adblock extension. this way, i'm able to zap all advertisements from my mindspace.
2005.12.16 :: friday
meditation :: 40 minute breath, ajna concentration, and vipassana
exercise :: 1 mile hard run / 2 mile walk / kung fu / aikido exercises / hot shower
breakfast :: boiled rolled oats with sea salt. garnished with roasted sunflower seeds and raisins. all organic, made with purified water, and and cooked on a wood-fired rocket stove.
critical mass is very real.
there's something powerful about 'the snowball effect'.
once a solid pattern gets going, it can really take off in exponential growth.
tip of the day :: every day, as part of my aikido exercises, i do as many forward and reverse rolls as possible. this can make me very dizzy. i've just learned that a good way to pull myself out of this is to jump up and down a bit. snaps me right back.
2005.12.15 :: thursday
meditation :: no time to sit today (domestic chaos!)
exercise :: 1 mile walk / hardcore kung fu class! / no shower (ahh!)
breakfast :: nori roll made with lundberg golden rose medium grain brown rice, raw scallions, umeboshi plums, and roasted sunflower seeds. all organic and made with purified water.
as we evolve and grow, we expand in greater consciousness and understanding.
at least, this is true if we are developing ourselves and following the tao.
as bob dylan once said, those not busy being born are busy dying.
tip of the day :: for vocal recording, condenser microphones work very well. i use a rode nt1-a with a eurorack ub1202 mixing board. along with my laptop and software, this combination makes a portable and efficient recording studio.
2005.12.14 :: wednesday
meditation :: 45 minute breath, ajna concentration, and vipassana
exercise :: 2 mile hard run / 2 mile walk / situps / pullups / pushups / kung fu / aikido exercises / yoga / cold shower
breakfast :: miso soup with onions, carrots, turnips, wakame, and broccoli. garnished with olive oil fried pieces of mochi seasoned with shoyu and raw diced scallions. cup of kukicha twig tea. all organic, made with purified water, and cooked on a wood-fired rocket stove. rock on!
it takes courage to love.
i'm reminded of the words of morrisey ::
"it's so easy to laugh
it's so easy to hate
it takes strength to be gentle and kind."
(these lyrics are from the song i know it's over on the queen is dead, the best smiths album in my opinion)
tip of the day :: when stretching your legs, make sure you keep your knees bent. stretching while having your legs locked straight out can be very hard on the knees.
2005.12.13 :: tuesday
meditation :: 45 minute breath, ajna concentration, and vipassana
exercise :: 2 mile run / 2 mile walk / situps / pullups / pushups / kung fu / aikido exercises / yoga / cold shower
breakfast :: rolled oats boiled in purified water and sea salt, served with almond butter and raisins. cup of kukicha twig tea. all organic.
i see our priorities in threes.
we can live for three seconds without energy (consciousness, spirit).
we can live for three minutes without air.
we can live for three days without water.
we can live for three weeks without food.
elements of our existence grow increasingly more sublte and difficult to perceive as they increase in importance.
this means that the most vital aspects of our lives are the most invisible.
today i worked on new vocals for lovely.
greetings to pig monkey who sent in some kind words and useful tips.
sorry for missing my journal post yesterday. i'll try to stay more on top of it. :)
tip of the day :: for the most part, my diet is entirely vegan. the only exception is, around once a month, i usually eat some fresh (not farmed) fish. i do this to make sure i get some vitamin b12. whenenever i feel weak, eating fish charges me back up.
whenever i eat fish, i eat it alone with raw lettuce or salad for balance. another good thing to eat along with fish is grated raw daikon radish. this helps cut the fat and makes it more digestible.
2005.12.11 :: sunday
meditation :: 30 minute breath, ajna concentration, and vipassana
exercise :: 2 mile walk / situps / pullups / pushups / kung fu / yoga / cold shower
breakfast :: soaked soft-cooked short grain brown rice boiled in purified water and sea salt, served with arcosanti olives, roasted sunflower seeds, and diced raw scallions. all organic.
been hearing from lawrence lessig over the last couple of days. always an honor.
mr. lessig is looking forward to the second t r y ^ d album. apparently we're going be featured by creative commons upon release.
this adds a bit of pressure to keep the music flowing.
nothing wrong with that.
tip of the day :: stand up for what you believe in. sooner or later we all pass away. why be afraid? speak up! let your voice be heard. now is the only time.
2005.12.10 :: saturday
spent all today on a tour of arcosanti.
a full report and photo gallery will be coming soon.
met some wonderful people and witnessed a very interesting experiment in innovative urban design.
tip of the day :: use free and open source software! by using free software, you promote general freedom and liberty. not to mention, you also save lots of money.
i've just created a free software list of all the applications i use to create the music and web pages you find here.
for more information, check out the free software definition offered by the gnu project.
2005.12.09 :: friday
meditation :: 30 minute breath, ajna concentration, and vipassana
exercise :: 1/2 mile walk / yoga / warm shower (taking it easy today)
breakfast :: rolled oats boiled in purified water and sea salt, served with almond butter and raisins. piece of homemade, maple sweetned apple pie. big cup of kukicha twig tea. all organic.
got to talk with try^d producer and samplist john holowach for the first time last night using skype. must say that it worked better than any other net phone i've ever used.
been running into some audio problems with my gnu/linux system lately, but i've got it worked out enough to do some more recording today.
planning on working on a new song named lovely.
tip of the day :: i wear lots of black. there's many reasons for this. first of all, it's hard to stain black clothes. black clothes will appear clean much longer than other colors.
second, black clothes don't attract much attention. this is useful if you are trying to reduce distractions in your environment. likewise, it is a good urban and nightime form of camouflage.
as it absorbes light, black attracts more heat. if i was around a nuclear explosion while wearing black, i would be instantly fried. depending upon your point of view, this could be seen as a benefit or weakness.
by the way, zen monks wear a lot of black, just because it looks cool.
2005.12.08 :: thursday
meditation :: 1 hour breath, ajna concentration, and vipassana
exercise :: 2 mile run / 2 mile walk / situps / pushups / pullups / aikido exercises / kung fu / yoga / cold shower
breakfast :: left-over homemade vegetable and seitan pot pie from dinner last night. all organic.
vast galactic guidance
as far as the inner eye can see
tiny planetary speck we
are seeds
tip of the day :: the highest concentration of nutrition found in vegetables is right where the roots meet the tops. unfortunately, many people cut too much of this part off. when preparing vegetables for cooking, be sure to leave as much of this part as possible, taking only a thin slice off the top. dice this area into small pieces, this way it spreads more evenly through your dish.
2005.12.07 :: wednesday
meditation :: 40 minute breath, ajna concentration, and vipassana
exercise :: 1 mile run / 3 mile walk / situps / pushups / pullups / aikido exercises / kung fu / yoga / cold shower
breakfast :: soaked and soft-cooked forbidden rice boiled with purified water and sea salt. mixed with left-over adzuki bean stew from last night. served with ume plums, nori, and a cascadian farms pickle! all organic.
threw myself extra hard into practice today.
i feel really intense, focused, and fairly anti-social.
tonight i'm going to continue studying gnu/linux and python.
tip of the day :: for shaving, i use a double-edge razor. there's no waseful plastic pieces to throw away and the blades are fairly cheap. you can often find inexpensive yet functional double-edge razors in antique stores. my facial hair is light, so i've never had to use shaving cream. i just use water, or occasionally soap.
2005.12.06 :: tuesday
meditation :: 45 minute breath, ajna concentration, and vipassana
exercise :: 3 mile walk / situps / pushups / pullups / aikido exercises / yoga / cold shower
breakfast :: rolled oats boiled with purified water and sea salt. garnished with almond butter and raisins. all organic.
woke up this morning feeling frustrated with the state of the world.
this means that i've got to spend more time improving my immediate situation and internal condition.
i need to look less at what is happening everywhere else.
this is the only way i will be able to offer any solutions.
tip of the day :: i like boonie hats. they're very practical for keeping the sun and rain off. you can find them for cheap at any army / navy surplus store.
in the third episode of the new season of patrolling, sean shows some boonie hat tips. just don't take that tinfoil stuff seriously. it's a joke. tinfoil actually amplifies ambient signals, it does not shield them. in fact, for true emf protection, you can find emf shielding hats online.
2005.12.05 :: monday
meditation :: 1 hour breath, ajna concentration, and vipassana
exercise :: 2 mile light run / 2 mile walk / situps / pushups / pullups / kung fu / aikido exercises / yoga / cold shower
breakfast :: soaked overnight and soft-cooked bhutanese red rice boiled with purified water and sea salt. garnished with an ume plum, nori, and diced raw scallions. all organic and cooked on a wood-fired rocket stove.
yesterday i bought myself a set of ear plugs.
as i do lots of meditation and studying, i am immediately finding them to be extremely helpful. not sure why i never thought of getting some before.
there's a lot of talk floating around about the future of technological body modification, with the idea that we may eventually be able to use implants to boost our abilities.
i've often thought that the one thing i would want is a simple switch to be able to turn off my hearing.
instant silence anywhere!
i'll guess i'll just stick with my ear plugs for now.
tip of the day :: my favorite soap is dr. bronner's. it's healthy, natural, biodegradable, and you can use it for anything you need soap for. use it for laundry, dishes, as a general house cleaner, and even as a body soap in the shower or bath. the stuff is rad!
plus, it's got a lot of cool writing on the label.
2005.12.04 :: sunday
meditation :: missed sitting this morning. will do later today.
exercise :: 1/2 mile walk / pullups
breakfast :: rolled oats boiled with purified water and sea salt. garnished with almond butter and raisins. all organic and cooked on a wood-fired rocket stove.
yes, christmas is approaching.
everyone is shopping and presents are slowly appearing under the decorated tree in the corner.
i'm hoping to have a new solo album ready by the new year. most of the demos i've been recording lately are for the second try^d album.
there's something magical about this time of year. people begin sharing more. a deeper love fills the air.
woudn't it be great if everyone lived like this all the time?
tip of the day :: i usually have a shakelight around at all times. they don't require any batteries or bulb changes, just one solid waterproof package. they're impressively bright.
the biggest drawback to a shakelight is that it is a bit noisy to carry around, due to the movement of its internal magnet. this is fine, as long as you are not huffing about on some kind of stealth mission. you also wouldn't want to put your shakelight near any magnetic media, such as hard drives or floppy disks, as shakelight magnets are very strong and could easily mess up your data.
these issues aside, i'd say that shakelights are very valuable items to own. if you get one, be sure to get a 'starcore' led model, as they are much brighter than the previous models. these flashlights are a small but good step in the direction towards sustainable energy use.
2005.12.03 :: saturday
meditation :: 1 hour breath, ajna concentration, and vipassana
exercise :: 1/2 mile stalking run (legs ache) / 2 mile slow walk / situps / pushups / pullups / kung fu / aikido exercises / yoga / cold shower
breakfast :: rolled oats boiled with purified water and sea salt. garnished with peanut butter and raisins. all organic and cooked on a wood-fired rocket stove.
thought isn't just images or words in the head. it's also feelings.
if you pay close enough attention, you'll find that every time you have a thought, a sensation arises in the brain and/or body. for me, it often feels like soft little clouds appearing in the brain.
if you're ever looking to quiet the mind (as i often am), get to the level of being able to feel the thoughts you are having.
works like a charm for me.
tip of the day :: be patient with yourself. any kind of change takes time and effort.
when going through some kind of healing transition, there's often uncomfortable feelings or illness that follows. this is what is called 'discharge' or 'detoxing'. this is the natural way that we eliminate unhealthy elements within.
in fact, a great many so called 'diseases' or even the 'common cold' are just this. it's funny how everyone always likes to blame a little bug or something, rather than taking any personal responsibility.
our bodies kick out garbage via runny noses, coughs, sneezes, and many other symptoms. just ride it out, maintain balance, and stay on target.
i once asked a 90+ year old man his secret to long life.
he laughed and said, 'just don't worry about anything.'
2005.12.02 :: friday
meditation :: 45 minute breath, ajna concentration, and vipassana
exercise :: 1 mile stalking run (see below) / 4 mile fast walk / situps / pushups / kung fu / aikido exercises / yoga
breakfast :: same as yesterday. all organic and cooked on a wood-fired rocket stove.
today i began a form of light running that i'm calling a 'stalking run'.
using what i'm learning in kung fu and aikido, i'm trying out a kind of smooth creeping run, using sweeping leg movements, along with keeping my stance sunk, as if i was trying to be quiet.
sometimes i shift my direction diagonally from side to side while i run. all the while, i'm keeping my back strait and my head looking forward.
it's quite a workout for the legs while being less impact for the joints.
i'm sure anyone watching me do this would think i look like some kind of crazy wanna be ninja.
perhaps i am. :)
tip of the day :: i tend not to eat many sweets, but when i do, my favorites are homemade desserts made using maple syrup.
i feel that maple syrup is probably the most natural and healthy sweetener one could use, especially if you live in north america, as it was the main sweetener of the north american natives. it actually matters to use organic maple syrup, as some non-organic producers use chemicals to control foaming while it's being boiled down.
one winter, i made maple syrup while living in the berskshire mountains. it takes 40 gallons of tree sap to produce 1 gallon of maple syrup. i'm very proud to have made 3 gallons of it, boiled over a wood-fired stove, collected using metal taps and buckets. if you do it right, collecting the sap doesn't harm the trees at all.
as a quick side note, did you know that many white sugar producers use charred animal bone as a filter during the refining process? therefore, i would say that refined white sugar is not vegan. it's also loaded with pesticides, unless it's organic. for your health, white sugar is probably the worst food you could eat, period.
2005.12.01 :: thursday
meditation :: 30 minute breath, ajna concentration, and vipassana
exercise :: 3 mile fast walk / situps / pushups / yoga / cold shower
breakfast :: soaked overnight and soft-cooked millet boiled with purified water and sea salt. served with raisins. all organic and cooked on a wood-fired rocket stove.
just woke up and wrote a new song called 'change'.
it's my reaction to seeing and hearing about so many people falling into using designer antidepressant pills to 'solve thier problems'.
the lyrics are somewhat modelled after the typical 'look at these happy people, buy our crap' commercial.
do yourself a favor and avoid television as much as possible. i do.
i'm especially pissed about this trend of drugging kids.
it's hard for me to imagine something more sick.
makes good money though right?
grrrr.....
tip of the day :: if you get the chance, take a vipassana meditation course.
a common english definition of 'vipassana' is 'seeing things as they really are.' here is the wikipedia definition of vipassana.
vipassana ten day meditation courses are completely free. yes, this means that they even feed and house you free of charge. vipassana courses are run soley upon donation and are staffed entirely by volunteers. center locations can be found all over the world.
i've sat two of these courses and i look forward to doing more. i count completing these courses as some of my life's greatest achievements. if you go, be prepared. generally speaking, these courses are not a relaxing vacation. they are very intense inner purification operations. although difficult, i find these courses to be extremely valuable.
2005.11.30 :: wednesday
meditation :: 40 minute breath, ajna concentration, and vipassana
exercise :: 4 mile fast walk / situps / pushups / kung fu / aikido exercises / yoga / cold shower
breakfast :: soft-cooked left-over forbidden rice boiled with purified water and sea salt. served with an ume plum, nori, and diced raw scallions. all organic and cooked on a wood-fired rocket stove.
last night was something like my 8th wing chun kung fu class.
it's really starting to sink in. it's pretty amazing how regular practice can make anything a part of our nature.
just got a nice email of support from a friendly fellow named justin. thanks for your message!
i'm hoping to get some more recording done today.
tip of the day :: the two most powerful natural remedies i know of are essential oil of lavender and umeboshi plums.
among its many uses, lavender oil is the best burn remedy ever. it should be required in any first aid kit. if you put lavender oil on a mild burn right after it happens, it will heal extremely fast without blistering or scarring. totally wonderful.
umeboshi plums are a traditional japanese plum that is pickled in sea salt and shiso leaves. i've never found a better remedy for most headaches, travel sickness, upset stomach, or any general illness. it even comes in a concentrated form convenient for travel. ancient samurai used to take ume before going off to battle. it's very grounding, serious stuff.
2005.11.29 :: tuesday
meditation :: 45 minute breath, ajna concentration, and vipassana
exercise :: 3 mile fast walk / situps / pushups / kung fu / aikido exercises / yoga / cold shower
breakfast :: forbidden rice boiled with purified water and sea salt, mixed with soaked and boiled black soybeans, seasoned with shoyu and ginger. side of lightly sauteed broccoli. garnished with scallions. all organic.
been doing some reading regarding the qualities of fascism.
very unfortunately, some of these same qualities are showing within the united states.
see if you agree.
"when fascism comes to america, it will be wrapped in the american flag." -huey long
i say we have a lot of work to do.
tip of the day :: a really great brand of backpacks and pouches is maxpedition. if you can afford them, these are some of the most versitile, strong, and functional bags i've ever seen.
2005.11.27 :: sunday
meditation :: 45 minute breath, ajna concentration, and vipassana
exercise :: 2 mile fast walk / situps / pushups / pullups / kung fu / aikido exercises / yoga / warm shower
breakfast :: soft-cooked brown rice boiled with purified water and sea salt. garnished with raisins. all organic.
i had a dream last night that i smoked marijuana and got into an argument with my mother. i woke up relieved that it was only a dream.
these days, a lot of discoveries are being made regarding the positive aspects of cannabis, which i think is a good step in this climate of senseless plant criminalization, yet there are negative sides of smoking pot, most of which are not being discussed.
first of all, from plenty of past experience, smoking marijuana creates drastic mood swings.
when smoked, there's an instant feeling of being more chilled out, more accepting of everyone and everything. the flip side of this is, when going through withdrawl, feelings of anger and rejection are very common. i've seen lots of cannabis smokers freak out in rage when they weren't high, including me.
what goes up must come down.
secondly, marijuana knocks out your short-term memory. if you're trying to learn anything, good luck. fortunately, this effect is only temporary and your memory will return to full capacity after a few weeks.
i suppose my final comments regarding the problems of pot concerns two more issues: cost and quality.
marijuana is extremely expensive to buy. i can think of many better ways to spend money. as far as quality goes, if you don't know the source, you never quite know what you're getting. i've heard horror stories of dealers spraying things like bug killer into grass to make it 'more sticky' and to 'give a better buzz.' frightening and sick.
like i've mentioned before, the best way to break any habit is sleep. take a long time off and stay in bed as much as possible.
i haven't smoked any grass in a while and i've determined i'm much better without it.
i find that consistant daily meditation gives a much better high.
and it's free!
tip of the day :: for health, the best cookware is clay or earthenware. the next best is stainless steel, but you should be careful not to scratch the surface of the pots as this will cause them to release tiny bits of steel. needless to say, these bits of steel can cause problems once they end up in your food and in the body. using aluminum or 'non-stick cookware' is toxic. avoid as much as possible.
when using stainless steel cookware, the best utensils to use are made of bamboo. bamboo utensils don't scratch pots and they are very resistant to water, so they don't need to be oiled like wood. they also reduce the amount of noise made during cooking, which makes for a more relaxing experience overall. they can be picked up for very cheap from any asian grocery.
2005.11.26 :: saturday
meditation :: 1 hour breath, ajna concentration, and vipassana
exercise :: 3 mile fast walk / situps / pushups / pullups / kung fu / aikido exercises / yoga / cold shower
breakfast :: soft-cooked brown rice boiled with purified water and sea salt. garnished with nori and an ume plum. all organic.
the third episode of patrolling was released today. excellent show!
here's a direct download link.
some thoughts ::
what is wisdom?
wisdom is direct perception.
when one is wise, one is in continuous awareness.
wisdom is insight and understanding of the order of this universe.
it is a deep knowledge of the cause and effect relationship of forces, an intuitive grasp into the nature of events. any action taken under the direction of wisdom is a benefitial action.
one gains wisdom through learning, experience, and self-reflection.
tip of the day :: as much as possible, don't sell your time. what is more valuable than your time? your time is your life. when you are employed, your life's energy is being given to your employer. therefore, choose your boss well, or better yet, be your own boss.
2005.11.25 :: friday
meditation :: 30 minute breath & ajna concentration
exercise :: 2 mile fast walk / yoga / cold shower
breakfast :: rolled oats boiled with purified water and sea salt. garnished with raisins. all organic.
principles of the wisdom oriented guardian (wog)
honor and protect life
work towards decreasing universal suffering
consistantly advance technologies, solutions, and abilities
maintain benefitial health habits and balance of mind, body, and spirit
contemplate and think for yourself while remaining open to the opinions of others
experiment, learn, and share practical information freely
remain grounded in the present, observant, and conscious
be generous while taking care of basic needs
create more than you consume
don't believe, directly percieve
tip of the day :: apparently, dome living is where it's at. i've lived in apartments, houses, tipis, log cabins, a yurt, and a van. i'm looking forward to eventually living in a dome. perhaps someday even a dome made out of cob.
2005.11.24 :: thursday
meditation :: 1 hour breath & ajna concentration
exercise :: 3 mile fast walk / kung fu practice / situps / pushups / pullups / yoga / cold shower
breakfast :: soft-cooked brown rice boiled with purified water and sea salt. garnished with raisins. all organic.
happy thanksgiving all!
we're having a vegan thanksgiving here, eating one of those wacky tofurkey things.
missed posting in my journal yesterday, as i was out all day looking at potential employment and housing.
after checking out some options, i've decided to continue being self-employed and mobile.
if anyone is looking for very inexpensive web hosting or web design, let me know.
if you appreciate what i'm doing, musically and otherwise, please donate.
i'll send cds to anyone who donates.
tip of the day :: according to my research in regards to water purification, distillation is the most simple and effective purification method for the largest amount of toxins. as soon as i can afford one, i plan on getting a waterwise 1600. here's it's specs and the best price i have found.
there are plenty of electric and automatic distillers out there, but this model can work without power and uses stainless steel, which is much healthier than exposing your drinking water to plastic (especially heated plastic).
also, using this, one could purify water using a rocket stove. very cool.
2005.11.22 :: tuesday
meditation :: 30 minute breath & ajna concentration
exercise :: 4 mile fast walk / kung fu practice / situps / pushups / yoga / cold shower
breakfast :: rolled oats boiled in purified water and sea salt. served with raisins and peanut butter. all organic.
funny enough, one of the greatest pieces of wisdom was shown to me when i was a young boy, from a silly television cartoon named transformers.
forgetting all the details, in the show, a robot was caught in a tangled mess of vines or something and was pulling desperately to break free.
the robot kept pulling and pulling, right through a commercial break, trying to get out.
after much struggle, the robot finally gave up, relaxed, and pulled back. to the robot's amazement, by doing this, it found itself freed from the trap.
the point was that sometimes, when we want to achieve something, we have to let it go, and in doing so, we find that we have succeeded.
this is what came to me today. this is what i must do during meditation.
tip of the day :: if you don't eat much animal food, you shouldn't need to use any soap or shampoo in your hair. for the last ten years, i haven't used any in mine and my hair is quite long. all i do is rinse it with water. our hair's natural oils are benefitial to it's well being. if you can, skip the shampoo.
2005.11.21 :: monday
meditation :: 40 minute breath & ajna concentration
exercise :: 4 mile fast walk / kung fu practice / situps / pushups / yoga / cold shower
breakfast :: rolled oats boiled in purified water and sea salt. served with raisins and peanut butter. all organic.
as human beings, we are both selfish and selfless.
as this universe is a dance between opposing yet connected and complimentary forces, it seems that the best answer to most questions is always 'balance'.
i've been feeling lately that our society is overly self-centered.
it's important to take care of yourself and everyone.
do things that are good for you and good for everyone else.
this way we win on all levels.
tip of the day :: share! anything you give to others helps yourself in the long run. when everyone shares more freely, we all benefit beyond our individual capabilities. 1 + 1 = 3!
2005.11.20 :: sunday
meditation :: 45 minute breath & ajna concentration
exercise :: 4 mile fast walk / kung fu practice / tao-yinn shiatsu / yoga / cold shower
breakfast :: toasted & soft-cooked buckwheat (kasha) boiled with purified water and sea salt. organic.
my knee is starting to feel better. perhaps walking fast is a more sustainable cardiovascular exercise for me. i'll keep going with it and see.
had a dream last night about george harrison of the beatles. i woke up with the song when we was fab playing in mind.
the dream was some kind of reflection upon fame, music, and death. i saw george staring out of a window at a beautiful tree as he was nearing his end.
i don't know why i've been so focused on mortality lately. i just feel like i'm missing something, like there's some kind of important point to life that is just beyond my grasp.
whatever it is, i'm hot on it's trail.
tip of the day :: maintaining a proper acid and alkaline balance in the body is very important. a number of years ago, i became exremely ill from being overly acidic and was misdiagnosed with everything from dysentery to ulcerative colitus. if you like, you can read my recovery story.
the bottom line is, you should have a basic understanding of the nature of acid and alkaline foods. if you ever experience 'heartburn' or abdominal distress, try eating some salad, sauteed cabbage, broccoli, or onions.
also, don't trust doctors. listen to their advice, but do your own research.
2005.11.19 :: saturday
meditation :: 1 hour breath & ajna concentration
exercise :: aikido exercises / kung fu practice / tao-yinn shiatsu / yoga / warm shower
breakfast :: rolled oats boiled with purified water and sea salt. served with peanut butter and strawberry jam. all organic.
most of today was spent downtown at a court house watching a young girl in our family become officially adopted.
there were hundreds of people there adopting. it was nice to see so many families helping out children in need.
people are generally good. even the so-called 'evil' ones are just usually too selfish or confused.
more music is beginning to move through the try^d process.
it's all got a new feel. much lighter and refreshing. i'm really loving it.
the next album is going to be excellent.
tip of the day :: turn off your television! watch as little movies as possible! make your life the action. become your own hero. there's plenty of drama and exciting ways to 'save the day' if you pay attention and get involved, even in the virtual landscape of the net. these days, you don't even have to leave your house to change the world. get creative!
2005.11.18 :: friday
meditation :: 15 minute breath & ajna concentration
exercise :: 3 mile power walk / situps / pushups / aikido exercises / yoga / cold shower
breakfast :: soft-cooked forbidden rice boiled with purified water and sea salt. served with peanut butter and raisins. all organic.
my knee is still hurting, so i've switched to power walking for now.
had another good kung fu class last night. i did get hit in the face once, but not too badly.
it's to be expected i suppose.
spent much of the day working on a demo of this.
it's still a work in progress and i'm hoping to get arna and emma of try^d involved.
tip of the day :: the best way to stay warm is to wear multiple layers of clothing, rather than just one heavy layer. for more information, check out my clothing essay.
2005.11.17 :: thursday
meditation :: 45 minute breath & ajna concentration
exercise :: walked 2 miles / situps / pushups / kung fu / yoga / warm shower
breakfast :: soft-cooked left over millet and bhutanese red rice boiled with purified water and sea salt, garished with raisins. eaten with some olive oil fried mochi seasoned with shoyu and wrapped in pieces of nori. all organic.
my knee is hurting again. ever since i was young, i've always had troubles with it.
running lately has really helped it, but this condition is fairly chronic.
sean has recommended that i try something called glucosamine sulfate.
apparently football players swear by it's effectiveness for healing joint injuries.
worth a try. i'll pick some up as soon as i can afford it.
tip of the day :: for cutting vegetables, nothing can compare to using square japanese knives. made by the same decendents who crafted samurai blades, my favorite is the nhs professional. for me, it's absolutely essential.
2005.11.16 :: wednesday
meditation :: 30 minute breath & ajna concentration (strong silence & focus)
exercise :: ran 2 miles (freezing cold!) / walked 2 miles / yoga / cold shower
breakfast :: soft-cooked bhutanese red rice boiled with purified water and sea salt. garnished with tahini, raisins, and a dash of umeboshi vinegar. cooked on a wood-fired rocket stove. all organic. yum yum!
last night was my fourth kung fu class. practice is going very well.
i am going to record today. expect a new song soon.
just discovered a show called force of one.
good stuff. contains some interesting and practical information
tip of the day :: think for yourself! always question, look for answers, and investigate if something works for you.
there is no replacement for your own experience. belief just doesn't cut it. listen to others, but rely ultimately upon your own perceptions. experiment and discover.
2005.11.15 :: tuesday
meditation :: 45 minute breath & ajna concentration
exercise :: walked 2 miles (body aches) / warm shower
breakfast :: soft-cooked toasted buckwheat (kasha) boiled with purified water and sea salt. garnished with some tahini and an ume plum. also had some miso soup with onions and wakame (seaweed), seasoned with some grated ginger juice. cooked on a wood-fired rocket stove. all organic.
had a long dream last night about the pure research labs.
in the dream, i was invited to a party at their home, which was filled with young and trendy people, most of them focused within their established social circles and not particularly friendly.
i spent the entire dream searching the party for serket and lava, wanting to honor and meditate with them, yet they could not be found.
here's a quote i thought of this morning in relation to sean ::
"no problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it."
-- albert einstein
tip of the day :: for ridding the body of chemical and radioactive exposure, there is nothing better than seaweeds.
some time ago, i read the book 'fighting radiation & chemical pollutants with foods, herbs, & vitamins' and seaweed topped the list. just as the sea has a natural cleansing and detoxifying quality, so do it's plants and salts.
2005.11.14 :: monday
meditation :: 50 minute breath & ajna concentration (very deep today)
exercise :: ran 2 miles / walked 1 mile / situps / pushups / yoga / kung fu / cold shower
breakfast :: soft-cooked millet boiled with purified water and sea salt. served with tahini and an ume plum. all organic.
if there is any evil in this world, it is within us.
if there is any enemy in this world, it is us.
tip of the day :: everyone is addicted to something or another. the high you can get from clean living is much more meaningful and profound than any intoxicating experience.
my trick to breaking a habit is sleep. any time i get an urge for something, i simply go to bed. if i'm ever coming off a major addiction, i take at least a week of 'sick time' (mostly spent in bed) away from all demands. when our systems are coming off of something, we are truly ill and we need rest.
2005.11.13 :: sunday
meditation :: 45 minute breath & ajna concentration
exercise :: ran 3 miles (!) / walked 2 miles / situps / pushups / yoga / kung fu / cold shower
breakfast :: rolled oats boiled with purified water and sea salt. served with tahini and raisins. all organic.
quite a nice morning.
been thinking seriously about recording the first weblife.org radio show.
it's something i've been considering for quite a while.
starting to get ready.
tip of the day :: it is very important to use unrefined sea salt in your cooking. conventional table salt has been stripped of it's mineral content, as companies found they could make more money from the minerals than the sodium. i've been using a form of sea salt known known as celtic sea salt.
many of the health problems that modern people face is due to a lack of minerals. chemical agriculture depletes minerals from top soil, and in effect, from our food. our blood is meant to share qualities of the sea. our entire well being depends upon a proper balance. switching your brand of salt is a very easy and powerful thing to do.
2005.11.12 :: saturday
been out mountain hiking and cave exploring all day.
a wonderful time indeed.
just watched the final trailer for john holowach's soon-to-be-released documentary ::
high: the true tale of american marijuana
can't wait to see it.
hope the 'drug war' gets a huge shot in the arm.
(this pun was unintentional.)
tip of the day :: cold showers are good for you! i began taking cold showers and swims years ago after reading that it was a common native habit for health. i find them extremely refreshing. really tones the body. start out with slightly warm water, and after a number of showers, you'll build up good tolerance to the cold.
other benefits of cold showers :: less chlorine exposure, less water use (try taking a long one!), less energy use (no need to heat the water), increased toxin discharge (the cold pushes out toxins from pores), good prep for emergency situations (ocean swimming, any loss of warmth), stimulating for the nervous system (wakes you up!).
2005.11.11 :: friday
meditation :: 45 minute breath, ajna concentration, & vipassana
exercise :: ran 2 miles (in the rain) / walked 1 mile / situps / pushups / yoga / kung fu / warm shower
breakfast :: soft-cooked short grain brown rice. made with purified water and sea salt. served with almond butter and raisins. all organic.
woke up very early this morning feeling quite refreshed.
cutting back on overeating has been really helping my entire daily routine.
wrote a new song last night called 'this' using a track from john holowach. should be available soon.
kung fu practice is going very well.
looks like i may be landing a technical job to save up for future travel.
got mixed feelings about it. we'll see how it goes.
tip of the day :: for toothcare, avoid all mainstream brands of toothpaste. my current favorite is weleda's salt toothpaste. if you like, you can always make your own.
i also use a hydrogen peroxide mouthwash. you can make this yourself by using one part filtered water to one part hydrogen peroxide. finish it off by adding a touch of your favorite essential oils.
2005.11.10 :: thursday
meditation :: 30 minute breath & ajna concentration
exercise :: ran 2 miles / walked 1 mile / situps / pushups / pullups / yoga / cold shower
breakfast :: soft-cooked boiled short grain brown rice. made with purified water and sea salt. cooked on a wood-fired rocket stove. garnished with diced raw scallions. all organic.
ate too much delicious olive oil and garlic pasta last night and woke up with a headache. i've found that nearly every headache (or any illness for that matter) is connected to what i eat.
as soon as i went for my run, the headache vanished.
running and walking are sure good for getting the digestion moving.
many great thanks to sean for inspiring me to run.
gotta stop overeating.
tonight is another kung fu class.
hopefully i'll be able to get some more recording done today.
tip of the day :: if you like keeping up with the news, be sure to investigate alternative sources. my favorites are common dreams, democracy now, newsreal, and free speech radio news. check out my full list of links. if you know of any others, please let me know.
2005.11.09 :: wednesday
meditation :: 45 minute zazen
exercise :: ran 2 1/2 miles / walked 1 mile / situps / pushups / pullups / yoga / kung fu / cold shower
breakfast :: boiled rolled oats. made with purified water and sea salt. cooked on a wood-fired rocket stove. served with almond butter and raisins. all organic. yum yum.
woke right up at the crack of dawn today, ready for my run.
fasting last night had a profound effect. i will definitely continue to refrain from eating at least three hours before bedtime. what a difference it makes.
been starting to really feel the depth of all these practices, from sitting, to kung fu. it's hard to explain. some profound, vast sense.
it occurred to me this morning that i must liberate myself from my own thought, or at least, my excess and pointless thinking.
tip of the day :: filter your water. all of it. due to our modern oil and chemical habits, there's plenty of pollution around. chlorine and flouride found in common tap water are both toxic. drink and cook with filtered water. use a shower filter. you'll notice the benefits.
2005.11.08 :: tuesday
meditation :: 30 minute breath & ajna focus
exercise :: ran 1 mile / walked 1 mile / situps / pushups / yoga / kung fu / cold shower
breakfast :: soft-cooked millet. made with purified water and sea salt. cooked on a wood-fired rocket stove. served with almond butter and an umeboshi plum. all organic.
tonight will be my third kung fu class.
planning on doing some recording today, a new 'rap' song called struttin.
i've got a handful of solo cds to copy and ship out. still getting requests from all over the world.
oddly enough, even though many people want the music, not many want to donate.
been quite broke lately, so i'm trying to figure out new sources of income without selling my soul.
tip of the day :: it's best not to eat at least three hours before bedtime. this is a habit i'm having a difficult time breaking. tonight i've vowed not to eat one scrap after dinner. should give me better rest.
2005.11.07 :: monday
meditation :: 1 hour breath & ajna focus
exercise :: ran 2 miles (!) / walked 1 mile / situps / pushups / yoga / kung fu / cold shower
breakfast :: soft-cooked short grain brown rice. made with purified water and sea salt. served with almond butter and raisins. all organic.
yesterday's egg experiment didn't go so well.
after eating it, i immediately felt a sense of sick toxicity. it made my mood more agressive, and as a release, i launched into dozens of kung fu practice strikes. didn't feel very good for much of the day.
perhaps it would have been better to eat the egg cooked rather than raw, but i don't think i'll be trying that again any time soon.
watched the corporation last night.
extremely educational. should be required viewing for all.
tip of the day ::
after a run, it's really good to take a long walk and let the heartbeat return back to normal. just stopping and resting after a run can be shocking to the system.
2005.11.06
meditation :: 45 minute breath & ajna focus
exercise :: ran 1 mile / yoga / kung fu / warm shower
breakfast :: soft-cooked short grain brown rice with one raw free-range egg mixed in (an experiment).
made with purified water, sea salt, and ume plum vinegar. garnished with scallions. all organic.
according to buddhist philosophy, there are two forms of truth, relative and absolute.
from a relative point of view, qualities such as good and evil exist. such qualities depend upon a particular point of view. something that may be seen as good for one, may be seen as evil by another. opinions formed within this realm depend upon different conditions.
from an absolute perspective, everything simply is what it is. from this point of view, good and evil do not exist. just as the sun shines on all equally, the absolute view makes no distinctions or judgements.
keeping both relative and absolute understandings in mind, i am able to maintain a moral compass, while ultimately knowing that everything is in it's proper place.
i can still be involved with the relative struggle for justice, while being able to 'sleep well at night', taking time out to embrace the perfection of everything.
tip of the day ::
fire is a critical element for human health. studies have shown that fire releases energy (negative ions), while electricity drains energy. my opinion is that many modern people smoke tobacco and marijuana to fill a need for fire energy.
electric stoves and microwaves drain meals of vital ions. cook on flame as much as possible.
2005.11.05
meditation :: 15 minute breath & ajna focus
exercise :: walked 1 mile / cold shower (taking it easy this weekend)
breakfast :: quinoa fruit pudding (thanks pure core!). made with purified water and sea salt. served with a bit of almond butter. all organic. fantastic! sweet enough to be a dessert.
everything begins within.
before we are able to take care of anything, we must first take care of ourselves.
taking care of ourselves is not selfish.
it's the best thing we could do for everyone else.
tip of the day ::
most every human society has some form of grain as the center of their diet. from there, vegetables and beans are next in line of importance. sweets, animal foods, oils, and fats are far less necessary. if you are careful enough, you don't need them at all. for an interesting overview, take a look at the philosophy known as macrobiotics, or even the fda food pyramid.
let's get the priorities right!
2005.11.04
meditation :: 1 hour breath & ajna focus
exercise :: ran 1 mile (legs feel great!) / situps / pushups / yoga / kung fu / cold shower
breakfast :: organic soft-cooked amaranth. made with purified water and sea salt. served with almond butter and raisins.
had my second kung fu class last night. really enjoying it.
this morning i woke up thinking about spiritual and mystical experiences.
meditation continues to teach me that much is possible in these areas.
it seems that the things keeping most people from such experiences is material attachments and the activity of their minds.
just as we can't graduate from a school without leaving the campus behind, so too we must break from our common mental and physical habits in order to view different dimensions.
seems fairly obvious.
tip of the day ::
the breath is an anchor. throughout life, practice consciousness of your breath. whenever you feel challenged, return to this awareness. a focused and trained mind is a very useful one.
2005.11.03
meditation :: 30 minute breath & ajna focus
exercise :: ran 1/2 mile / walked 1/2 mile (legs improving!) / yoga / warm shower
breakfast :: organic rolled oats cooked on a wood-fired rocket stove. made with purified water and sea salt. served with tahini and raisins.
wrote another new song last night. it's called 'empty'.
been stuck in my head all morning.
i'm studying texts from the linux documentation project to better understand my system.
tip of the day :: when using bathrooms, don't sit on toilet seats. they can spread disease. instead, lift the seat and squat over the bowl. this position is much better for elimination.
also, if possible, rather than going to the bathroom in water, compost it.
2005.11.02
meditation :: 1 hour breath, ajna focus, & vipassana
exercise :: walked 1 mile (legs still healing) / situps / pushups / yoga / cold shower
breakfast :: soft-cooked short grain brown rice, soaked the night before and cooked on a wood-fired rocket stove. made with purified water and sea salt. served with tahini and raisins.
last night was my first wing chun kung fu class.
it was totally great. i'm now dedicating myself to the practice.
also, just finally got to watch the movie equilibrium.
fantastic movie. highly recommended.
tip of the day :: when in meditation, keep your awareness here and now. the moments when you feel the urge to stop are the most important to remain sitting through. discomforts are signs that the practice is working well.
push on.
2005.11.01
meditation :: 30 minute breath & ajna focus
exercise :: walked 1 mile (legs still ache) / yoga / warm shower
breakfast :: adzuki bean and millet stew with onions, potato, kombu, and shiitake. garnished with scallions
conflict is a natural and unavoidable quality of life.
the art of maintaining peace is the ability to keep a balance between opposing forces, knowing how much to bend, yet how much to remain firm.
we must remain flexible, but without being a pushover.
flow.
everything is a dance.
tip of the day :: when you sit down to eat, take a minute or two of silent relaxation before you begin. when you eat, close your eyes and chew each bite as completely as possible. it has been shown that people in starvation situations outlive others by chewing very well. let your meals be a time of meditation.
2005.10.31
meditation :: 45 minute breath & ajna focus
exercise :: walked 2 miles (legs ache) / situps / pushups / yoga / cold shower
breakfast :: organic soft boiled short grain brown rice and sea salt
what an interesting experience life is.
i feel as if i know so little about what is going on here, yet it's obvious that i am this universe.
so, it seems that on some level, i must know everything.
tip of the day :: when you awake from sleep, be sure to spit out whatever phlem has accumulated in your throat. yoga teaches that any toxins that build up in the throat during rest should be expelled.
2005.10.30
meditation :: 1 hour breath & ajna focus
exercise :: ran 1 mile / situps / pushups / cold shower
breakfast :: organic rolled oats boiled in filtered water with sea salt and organic raisins
i've decided to begin posting more detailed journal entries, inspired by sean kennedy.
this week i begin practicing wing chun kung fu.
vocal recording begins tomorrow.
just wrote a new song last night.
tip of the day ::
for a shiny hair look, instead of synthetic jells, use jojoba oil (pronounced ho-ho-ba).
it's a light oil that is very healthy for skin and hair.
it's expensive stuff, but worth it.

you tell me what you dream
i'll tell you who you are
sometimes you might find me wishing
that this whole world would listen
we billions one light beam
born streams of burning stars
are we all now finally seeing
what we've allways been being
people running all around
highways over and underground
cities made of steel and stone
babies call them home
creatures crawling on the ground
bee hive busy buzzing sound
ant hills hailing to the queen
empires towering over trees
